Weymouth Mayor Hedlund to Step Down After Nearly a Decade
Resignation effective July 15, 2025; Council President Molisse to serve as acting Mayor until November election
WEYMOUTH - June 17 - Weymouth Mayor Robert Hedlund is set to resign on July 15, 2025, after serving nine and a half years in office. He announced his decision in a statement to residents, timing it so the mayoral election will align with the Town Council races in November.
"I've made the tough choice to step down as Weymouth's Mayor after nine and a half years," Hedlund said. "I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve."
By resigning in July, Hedlund aims to save the town money by avoiding a special election. The Town Clerk will schedule the mayoral vote alongside the Town Council elections in November.
Hedlund expressed confidence in Weymouth's future, saying, "I'm leaving the town in great hands, and I believe things will only get better from here."
Before becoming mayor in 2016, Hedlund served as State Senator for 21 years, highlighting his long-term commitment to public service.
After Hedlund's departure, Council President Michael Molisse will serve as acting Mayor, and Chief of Staff Ted Langill will stay in his role to continue to manage town affairs.
"Even though I'm leaving office, I'll always care deeply about what happens in Weymouth," Hedlund added. "I'll stay involved as a citizen and I'm happy to offer advice if asked."
Hedlund's political journey began in 1990 when he was elected State Senator at 29. He served multiple terms, including a stint as Assistant Minority Leader, before taking on the role of Weymouth's mayor in 2016.
