Scituate Secures $5.5M for Vital Seawall Repairs
Funds from Senator Markey's office to support much-needed repairs on town's deteriorating seawalls
SCITUATE, MA - April 9 - The town of Scituate has been awarded a $5.5 million grant from Senator Ed Markey's office for critical seawall repairs. This grant, the largest of its kind in the Commonwealth this year, will help fund much-needed improvements to protect the coastal community.
Town Administrator Jim Boudreau announced the grant during the April 9 Select Board meeting, stating that Senator Markey's office will be scheduling a time to present the award to the town in person within the next few weeks.
"We look forward to welcoming them and accepting them as citizens," Boudreau said.
The grant comes as a significant boost to Scituate's ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade its seawalls, which serve as a vital line of defense against coastal flooding and erosion. The town has been actively seeking funding to address the deteriorating condition of its seawalls, recognizing the importance of these structures in protecting homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
Select Board Chair Karen Canfield expressed gratitude for the grant and the efforts of those who worked to secure the funding. "Thank you for submitting for those grants and congratulations for winning them," Canfield said. "So all good stuff."
The seawall repairs are expected to commence once the grant funds are officially received and the necessary planning and permitting processes are completed. The town will work closely with state agencies and local stakeholders to ensure that the repairs are carried out efficiently and effectively.
In addition to the seawall grant, Boudreau also announced that Scituate will be receiving a $970,000 grant for its water treatment plant from Congressman Bill Keating's office. This funding will help the town improve its water infrastructure and ensure a reliable supply of clean drinking water for residents.
The Select Board acknowledged the hard work and dedication of town staff in securing these grants, recognizing the importance of their efforts in advancing Scituate's infrastructure projects. "Just want to thank you all for everything you've done today," Canfield said.
As Scituate prepares to receive the seawall and water treatment plant grants, the town remains committed to proactively addressing its infrastructure needs and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. These grants represent a significant step forward in the town's ongoing efforts to build resilience against the challenges posed by climate change.
The Select Board and town officials express their appreciation to Senator Markey, Congressman Keating, and their respective offices for their support and partnership in securing these critical funds for Scituate. The town looks forward to putting these grants to work and making meaningful improvements that will benefit the community for years to come.
