The update on the fire station project took center stage during Tuesday’s meeting, tracking the next phase of development following the successful demolition of the old Lincoln School. Town Administrator Doug Lapp reminded the board that Rockland is operating under a strict $250,000 appropriation for the demolition and a $26.1 million cap for the building construction. When an independent cost estimator warned that regional bidding climates threatened to push the initial schematic design over budget, the team immediately implemented a “value management” scaling process.
Architect Kelsey Laser of Schwartz/Silver presented the revised site plan, noting that despite shrinking the building’s gross footprint, the programmatic integrity of the facility remains completely intact. Beyond structural modifications, the board finalized external aesthetics, voting unanimously to approve an unilluminated raised metal lettering configuration for the east public entrance and a powder-coated fabricated metal fire department badge for the building’s corner watchtower—a feature intentionally designed to replicate the historical profile of the original Lincoln School.
The board also learned that the station will utilize a highly specialized zoning system to protect personnel from carcinogenic contaminants. An orange “hot zone” will isolate vehicles and active gear, while pressurized yellow vestibules will act as air-locked buffer zones preventing hazardous particles from migrating into the clean, day-to-day living and administrative spaces.
