PLYMOUTH COUNTY — September 2, 2026 — Anthony Thomas O’Brien, Sr. held a 2,225-vote lead in the Republican primary for Plymouth County commissioner early Wednesday, according to preliminary returns collected by South Shore News from local clerks.
With 22 of Plymouth County’s 27 communities reporting, O’Brien had received 10,133 votes, or 46.3%. Incumbent Sandra M. Wright followed with 7,908 votes, or 36.1%, while Korey Michael Welch had 3,748 votes, or 17.1%.
O’Brien led in 16 of the 22 reporting communities. His advantage was built in part on strong results in Plymouth, where he led Wright 2,138 to 1,251, and Pembroke, where he led 806 to 285.
Wright recorded her strongest result in Bridgewater, defeating O’Brien there 868 to 365. Welch carried his hometown of Rockland with 471 votes, ahead of O’Brien’s 280 and Wright’s 197.
Abington, Hingham, Marshfield, Plympton and Rochester were not included in the 7 a.m. tally. While O’Brien’s lead is substantial, Hingham and Marshfield are meaningful vote centers, leaving the contest uncalled pending more complete returns.
The Republican winner is expected to face Democratic nominee Rhonda L. Nyman in November. South Shore News previously outlined the matchup.
