DUXBURY - July 2, 2026 - The Duxbury School Committee voted unanimously on Thursday to approve a customized, fast-track application process to fill an unexpected vacancy left by the resignation of member Jen Weedon. Moving swiftly to avoid a protracted vacancy, the committee finalized a “letter of preference” to be sent to the Selectboard, proposing a timeline that sets a firm application deadline in early August and schedules a joint meeting for candidate interviews on August 17. The newly appointed interim member will serve for approximately seven months until the annual town election in March 2026, at which point the final remaining year of Weedon’s unexpired term will be placed on the ballot.

The Full Story

The emergency session was called to address an unplanned shake-up on the Duxbury School Committee. At the start of the meeting, the committee addressed immediate leadership needs by electing member Laurel Deacon to serve as Vice Chair. The position was filled via a quick 4-0 roll-call vote following an abbreviated nomination process.

The primary focus of the meeting, however, quickly turned to navigating filling an unexpected seat. Committee Chair Matt Gambino clarified that neither state law nor Duxbury town bylaws enshrine a repeatable application intake process for mid-term board vacancies. Instead, Massachusetts General Law Chapter 41, Section 11 dictates only the final selection method: a majority vote of both the Selectboard and the remaining School Committee members during an officially noticed joint meeting.

To bridge this procedural gap, Gambino presented three strategic options: amend permanent school district policy, execute a customized “one-off” process for this specific vacancy, or defer the responsibility entirely to the Selectboard. The committee quickly rejected a permanent policy overhaul as being too time-consuming for a summer timeline, opting instead to build a streamlined, one-time roadmap.
