Was heartening to see Duxbury Town Meeting members cut through all the conspiracy theories and misinformation spread by the local Republican Town Committee and others to do the right thing on the MBTA Communities proposal.

But they did not. They met the letter of the law but utterly avoided the intent. They did the best they could to not provide zoning for additional multi-family housing, and, oh dear, not near “us”. The state has recognized the very real need for affordable housing for workers and young families, so they tried to incentivize future developments. The town barely provided additional zoning, certainly not for the actual new development the law intended. They did a dirty scoot around it. Please read again:

“The article passes with a vote of 255 to 152, establishing overlay districts at two existing dense residential areas – The Village at Duxbury and Island Creek Residences.”

If you want to eat out, shop at a grocery, get your car repaired or have a teacher in your child’s classroom, affordable housing matters.

I don't disagree, but the MAGA elements within Duxbury will never let true affordable housing be built. You saw this last Fall when the Bongi's property was proposed for MBTA zoning. As far as the MBTA Communities law goes, the best we can do is comply with the letter of the law, while concurrently fighting for true affordable housing via other channels.
