'Devastating' Cuts Loom Over Hanover Schools After Override Defeat
Increased Class Sizes, Eliminated Programs, and Staff Layoffs Expected
HANOVER, MA - May 23, 2024 - The Hanover Public School community is reacting after the recent override vote failure, forcing the School Committee to make drastic cuts to the district's budget. A meeting on May 23 revealed the harsh realities facing the schools, with significant reductions planned across all grade levels.
Superintendent Matt Ferron outlined the details, starting with the elimination of eight instructional positions at the elementary level, which will inevitably lead to larger class sizes. The middle school will lose four instructional positions, severely impacting elective programs such as art, band, and music. The high school faces the most devastating blow, with 10-12 instructional positions slated for elimination, potentially jeopardizing AP courses and other academic offerings. District-wide cuts to administrative and support staff will further compound the challenges.
In an effort to bridge the financial gap, the committee approved increases to athletic fees and explored the possibility of implementing transportation and activity fees. Athletic fees for tier 1 and tier 2 sports will rise to $350 and $450, respectively, while a proposal for a $300 transportation fee per student, capped at $900 per family, is under consideration.
During the public comment period, community members voiced their concerns about the impact of these cuts on students, particularly the reduction of arts and music programs. Many expressed a willingness to support the schools through donations and volunteer work, while others suggested exploring alternative funding sources.
The school committee acknowledged the difficult decisions ahead and expressed gratitude for the community's unwavering support. They reaffirmed their commitment to preserving core academic programs and meeting all educational requirements, despite the financial constraints.
